Taiwanese dance star Sheu Fang-yi and Tôn Thất An collaborated a couple of times in the early 2010’s. Sheu Fang-yi was then the principal dancer at the Martha Graham Dance Company and asked the composer to write music for a new solo. This led to Oneness, which she performed in New York, Taipei and Macau.
More than ten years later, this piece reappeared in Salute 我心我行, a documentary directed by Yao Hung-yi and produced by Hou Hsiao Hsien about her illustrious career, which combines rehearsal and personal footage, performances of some of her key works, and a cinematic dance re-interpretation of her life, career, childhood and inner world played by Hsieh Ying-xuan (Nina Wu, Little Big Women) and Bamboo Chen Chu-sheng (The Great Buddha +). The score was composed by Lee Che-yi, under the supervision of Lim Giong, but Oneness features in its entirety.
The film has been selected at this year’s Taipei Golden Horse Festival and has garnered Sheu Fang-yi an award for ‘Best Action Choreography’. The film was released theatrically nationwide in Taiwan on November 11, 2022.
