Everybody’s gotta love sometimes wins ‘Jury Special Mention’ @ Biff 2023

Sein Lyan Tun‘s new short film Everybody’s gotta love sometimes had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in the Wide Angle Asian Short Films section, and garnered a Jury Special Mention win after much controversy.
The film follows Phyo, a young Burmese man who arrives in Paris and has to adjust to a new country and a new environment. He also looks for love but abuses and past traumas keep haunting him.

Jury Comment: “We would like to specifically mention Everybody’s Gotta Love Sometimes by Sein Lyan Tun, a director from Myanmar. It eloquently transforms personal wounds and traumas into the language of cinema. The protagonist, Phyo, is a queer Asian immigrant residing in Paris, who is concurrently a victim of sexual violence. The traumas of his past is teased through sporadic sounds akin to hallucinations, while his current focus lies in the language of liberated gestures. Rather than exhaustively explaining every detail, the film successfully employs powerful, evocative music coupled with moderate storytelling. We express our profound support for Phyo’s journey towards genuine mental and physical freedom, extending deep admiration and encouragement for the work of director Sein Lyan Tun.”
